His Name: The First Most Important German Shepherd Training

No matter what kind of training you’re planning to give your German Shepherd, there is one thing you must teach him without fail. And it’s his name.

Simply put, if he can’t realize that you’re calling him, then there is no way you can train him effectively. And the only way to teach him to answer to his name whenever you call it out is to use it persistently for many times. If you persistently call his name out, he’ll eventually track down that you’re calling him.

It’s important to appreciate him by calling him by his name only and not by any other cheesy name. Whenever he responds well, don’t forget to praise him. This way, he’ll learn this lesson a lot quicker.

‘Come’

The best way to train your dog for this command is to call him out using “Come” while he’s busy doing something else. After this, if he looks towards you, immediately call him by his name.

Now, if he starts to move towards you, say “Come.” And the moment he gets near you, start praising him and don’t hesitate to give him a little treat if that seems to be helping in the training of your German Shepherd.

However, if the trick doesn’t seem to work or your dog is no longer interested in the same boring treat you present them with, you just need to change things a bit. Try to switch to a different kind of treat. If treating him isn’t working, you can provide him with other high-value rewards.

If you try these tricks, he’ll surely start to obey you and learn the “Come” command a lot faster.

‘Sit’

Training your German Shepherd to sit is a little tougher than the other two training we’ve mentioned earlier. But if you train him in the right way, he’ll learn this command fast too.

First, you need to bring a treat your dog loves the most to start this training. Now, if your German Shepherd is standing right now, just keep the treat a little higher than his nose line. Remember, you need to hold it just a little bit out of the reach and not too high. Otherwise, he may start to jump. After this, move your hand holding the treat in a way as if you’re going to move it from its head to his tail.

Once you do this, your German Shepherd will eventually drop his back by folding his back legs in order to see where his treat is. Voila, now your dog is sitting and now, you should let him have his treat. You can add a little praise too if you want. Keep doing this practice for a while and then you should use the word “Sit” while doing this exercise.

This way, it’ll be his secondary nature to sit down whenever you’ll ask him to sit.
